Industrial solar energy for a Cancer Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya

Introduction:
Our client, the CEO of a real estate company in Kenya, is seeking partners and financing to raise funds for the only cancer hospital in downtown Mombasa. Due to the unstable electricity supply in the city, which currently relies on diesel generators as a backup, the client aims to replace the diesel generators with a solar power system.

Power Requirements:
The client desires a hybrid solar-wind system that can generate between 250,000 kWh to 275,000 kWh per month. Furthermore, they anticipate the need to expand the system's capacity to 325,000 kWh in the future to accommodate new medical equipment. The high electricity demand is due to the fact that the city is unable to provide clean drinking water, and a portion of the power will be used for desalination to obtain potable water.

Initial Considerations:
Initially, the client wanted to implement a hybrid solar-wind system, with the wind turbines operating for 15 hours a day and the solar panels for 7-9 hours. The hospital's roof area spans 25,000 square feet, which is the only available space for installation. However, I informed the client that the maximum wind turbine capacity for the roof area is 5 kW, resulting in significantly lower energy generation compared to a solar-only system. Additionally, wind turbines would occupy valuable roof space and be affected by shading. Considering these factors, the roof can accommodate a maximum of around 900 solar panels, assuming the use of 550 W solar panels, resulting in a daily energy generation of approximately 2,900 kWh.

Power Demand and Inverter Selection:
The client estimates a daily electricity demand of around 8,000 kWh. we discussed using a 400 kW inverter based on data from other hospitals. Taking all factors into account, the client decided to proceed with 750 panels of 700 W each to reduce costs.

Installation Concerns:
The client expressed the requirement for an engineer to be on-site in Kenya to oversee the installation if we were to secure the project. I assured them that for a large-scale system like theirs, we can provide on-site installation guidance and train local electricians responsible for future maintenance of the solar power system. The client was satisfied with this arrangement.
